For 26 years The Shipmaster’s Business Self-Examiner has been the indispensable companion for all mariners studying for their MCA Master’s Orals exams. As a study aid, it is unrivalled.

This 11th edition retains the familiar question-and-answer format of its predecessors but has been redesigned to provide a much-improved user experience. Navigation through the complexities of the Master’s duties has been eased by splitting the subject into 114 topics.

The text has been completely revised and updated to the end of Q1/2024, reflecting the many changes to maritime legislation and MCA guidance since Britain’s exit from the EU.

An introductory section provides practical guidance on preparing for and answering Master’s Orals. The Q&As follow closely the topics covered in recent Orals questions and better reflect the needs of today’s shipping industry. The reorganisation of the material enhances the 11th edition’s value as a reference for the newly qualified Master and for all who have decision-making responsibilities at sea and onshore.

About the Authors

Malcolm Maclachlan Master Mariner FNI

Following pre-sea training on HMS Worcester, Dover-born Malcolm Maclachlan was apprenticed in 1964 to Alfred Holt & Company. He later sailed with various coaster, ferry, cargo liner and tanker companies, as well as Scottish Fishery Protection, before becoming Master in Bell Lines’ Irish-flag container ships in 1978.

Redundancy led to a year of teaching at Leith Nautical College and four years on North Sea drilling rigs. In 1989 Maclachlan began 24 years of teaching at Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, specialising in Shipmaster’s Business and Law. During this period, he conceived and wrote The Shipmaster’s Business Companion and The Shipmaster’s Business Self-Examiner. For several years he drew a monthly cartoon for the NUMAST Telegraph.

Now retired, Maclachlan lives with his wife Lesley in southern Scotland, counting acrylic painting, calligraphy and playing harmonica amongst his leisure activities.

Dr Simon Daniels PhD AFNI

Simon Daniels qualified as a solicitor in 1985, specialising in criminal and maritime litigation, before qualifying as a mediator.

From 2007 he managed the law and business elements of the Merchant Vessel Operations programme at Warsash Maritime Academy, later becoming course leader in maritime undergraduate and postgraduate studies. In 2012, Simon was awarded a PhD for his thesis ‘The Criminalisation of the Ship’s Master’. As a senior lecturer he assisted students with their academic studies and was a PhD supervisor.

Since leaving Warsash in July 2019 he has undertaken consultancy projects, including provision of online courses for the Nautical Institute Academy. He has contributed articles to the Nautical Institute’s membership magazine, Seaways and completed the world’s first major text book on the criminalisation of the ship’s Master, Responsibility and Accountability in Maritime Law, published in April 2022. His latest textbook, on Shipboard Management studies, is due for publication in 2024.
