About the Author

Captain Hemant is a Master Mariner, MBA and a Fellow of the Nautical Institute (FNI). He started his carrier with V Ships and sailed for 16 years, mainly in dry bulk vessels. Thereafter he was in dry bulk and multipurpose port operations for 12 years, of which 8 years were at Jurong Port in Singapore. For the last 4 years, he has been in the shipping and port consultancy at Drewry, a UK-based, 50-year-old company.

Hemant is very passionate about improving safety and efficiency in dry bulk operations. He has done many efficiency improvements in ports, without sinking any capex and executed many complex operations in ports including damage vessels, heavy lift vessels, etc. While in Jurong Port, he was the de facto Harbour Master. Due to his expertise, he has been selected for the technical committee of the Nautical Institute.

Hemant is passionate about improving standards in the maritime industry. He has been a regular writer on port operations and safety in the Seaways magazine of The Nautical Institute. He is also CHIRP Ambassador to help in improving the safety standards of the maritime industry. He was also one of the few members of the Maritime Welfare Committee of the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore.

Hemant’s latest forte is green shipping and is also one of the members of the Green Curriculum Working Group, a global working group for the formulation of training requirements for seafarers in the handling of alternative fuels. shipping domain.
