What is a Special Casualty Representative?

20 Jan 2026 06:30PM - 08:00PM Online Branch UK/North Scotland

The North Scotland Branch of The Nautical Institute is pleased to host its first webinar of 2026 on the role of the Special Casualty Representative (SCR), of which there are around 50 active listed and acknowledged by the Lloyds Salvage Arbitration Branch globally.

This introduction will be followed by a discussion on two recent shipping casualties that were successfully handled by the Port of Aberdeen in the South Harbour:

The first case study will highlight the challenges faced in responding to a fire within a bulk cargo of wood pulp.

The second case study will look at the challenges of handling a severely fire-damaged container ship, and discuss learning outcomes from vessel and cargo handling as well as cargo processing.

We hope to illustrate that, by transparency and co-operation, shipping casualties should not be seen as negative to a port or local communities.

Speakers:

Capt Adrian Scales CMMar FNI | Director of Europe, Brookes Bell

Capt Chris Williams AFNI | Managing Master Mariner, Brookes Bell

Benji Morrison | Aberdeen Harbour Master
