Water Safety: A Regulatory Shift
The North West England & North Wales Branch of The Nautical Institute is pleased to host its next technical seminar on the theme of passenger safety from water-borne diseases on board ships.
There has been a recent and alarming rise in Legionella cases globally. Several have been associated with the cruise industry. This has triggered significant regulatory change in Europe that affects the whole of the maritime industry, and cruise ships in the US. It is clear there are knowledge gaps across all departments - both onboard and shoreside, and little understanding of the huge risks of ineffective potable water safety management. This has an implication for the Masters’ liability and other Officers aboard these ships as well as those ashore in management. This presentation outlines some background to the issue and the different approaches being taken by EU and US regulators.
