The loss of the M.T. Sanchi

12 Mar 2026 06:00 PM Online: Microsoft Teams Webinar UK/North West England & North Wales

Presented by Captain Paul Walton AFNI, Consultant Master Mariner

This presentation provides a detailed account of the loss of the ‘M.T. SANCHI’, an Iranian-flagged Suez-Max tanker, registered under the Iranian flag, which was transporting a full cargo of condensate from Iran to South Korea.

During the evening watch ‘M.V. CF CRYSTAL’, fully loaded with bulk corn and travelling from the USA to China, collided with ‘SANCHI’. The impact of the collision resulted in a catastrophic explosion and fire, which ultimately claimed the lives of all those on board the ‘SANCHI’.

This presentation examines the responses of the numerous parties involved following the collision. It also explores the challenges encountered in the efforts to extinguish the fire and to prevent environmental pollution.
