His Excellency Teodoro Locsin Jr, Ambassador from the Philippines to the United Kingdom, met with headquarters staff at The Nautical Institute on Wednesday 24 September 2025

His Excellency received a briefing on the charitable work of the Institute, including our global reach to promote and enhance the professionalism of all seafarers.  This included an update on the activities of our branch in the Philippines, our five accredited training centres in his home country, and the professional training delivered to over 2000 Filipino Dynamic Positioning Officers and Vessel Maintainers certified by The Nautical Institute.

His visit facilitated a series of discussions on how The Nautical Institute can enhance our activities in the Philippines as well as how we can coordinate our efforts to promote high professional standards and enhanced safety for seafarers.  Accompanied by Atty Sharon Aledo, the Maritime Attaché of the Philippines at the International Maritime Organization (IMO, the discussions were able to identify areas of common interest across a range of IMO regulatory proposals.

With a family history of seafaring, the Ambassador became thoroughly engaged with the wide range of activities that The Nautical Institute promotes throughout our network of members and to the wider seafaring community.  As well as the 60 titles in our Institute publications catalogue ranging from Bulk Carrier Practice to Bridge Resource Management, discussions included the work of the Institute to write, publish and distribute our Training Standards for Handling Alternative Fuels free of charge to all seafarers, training institutions and delegates at the IMO.

As he departed from our Headquarters, Captain Chris O’Flaherty AFNI our lead delegate at the IMO, presented His Excellency with a personal copy of the 50th Anniversary book produced to celebrate the first half-century of our work to empower the leaders of tomorrow.
