Seafarer Welfare in the Age of E-Navigation

Last week, our Senior Technical Manager Captain Aly Elsayed AFNI, represented The Nautical Institute at the Seafarer Welfare in the Age of E-Navigation – Mariners’ Workshop 2026, organised by The Shipping Federation of Canada.

Captain Elsayed delivered a session on “Seafarer Welfare in the Age of E-Navigation – Challenges and Opportunities”, focusing on the work we do through our projects. Key points that strongly resonated with the audience included:

  • How welfare sets the conditions and wellbeing shows whether they actually work
  • Why Human-Centred Design is no longer optional
  • Why listening to seafarers truly matters
  • Why a shift from Safety-I to Safety-II thinking is essential
  • How technology enhances safety only when aligned with human capabilities

The session highlighted the growing need for a genuine human-centred approach to ship and system design, one led by seafarers’ lived experiences and supported by effective collaboration between designers, engineers and end users.

The workshop featured many insightful contributions, all reinforcing a shared commitment to improving mariners’ welfare and wellbeing across the industry.
