The Institut des hautes études de défense nationale (Institute for Higher National Defence Studies) visited The Nautical Institute for a series of briefing on the work of he International Maritime Organisation.

Under the guidance of Vice Admiral Jean Hausermann, and Prefect Nicolas Basselier, fifty members of this year’s course received briefings from the French Ambassador to the IMO, Her Excellency Marine de Carné-Trécesson and Captain Chris O’Flaherty. These highlighted the vital work of flag State Delegations in deciding maritime regulation, and the expert influence of non-Governmental organisations such as The Nautical Institute.

We were also delighted that the Chair of our French Branch, Captain Nicolas Millot, was able to join us in between his seagoing role as Master of a pipelaying vessel. He discussed our Institute’s work in France to build seafarer networking opportunities, share best practice, and also their organisation of a forthcoming conference on the work of Designated Persons Ashore in France, and the ISM Code.

This visit by IHEDN was part of a wider programme which included presentations at Lloyd’s of London by Nigel Carter, Neil Roberts and Peter Aylott.
