CLASS B AIS TRANSMISSION LIMITATIONS - Collision Investigation Report

11 Aug 2011 Resource

Whilst a Class B AIS transponder as fitted to small vessels can be a valuable aid in collision avoidance.
This report illustrates that it is only one of many possible aids and that larger vessels using Class A AIS transponders may
only see limited details of the Class B transmissions.
Following a collison between two vessels off the coast of Australia in 2009, the subsequent investigation report
draws attention to the possible limits of Class B AIS transmissions, both at the time of the collision and in subsequent tests in Port. The report also draws attention to the need to have the Class B transponder programmed correctly.
