April Council meeting

30 Apr 2025 Institute News

Last week we were pleased to welcome our council members from around the world, joining in-person and online to actively participate in the proceedings.

The Council considered recommendations from the Nominations Committee for appointments in several positions.  Relevant positions will be put to our membership for election at the upcoming Annual General Meeting next week in Dubai, along with other post holders who were previously approved for appointment. They also received relevant business updates.

Following the formal business of Council, members were invited to participate in focus group sessions hosted by the Membership & Branches team and built around four key questions:

  • How can branches deepen their ties with their local maritime communities?
  • What would they like to see their branch do differently?
  • How can branches best harness the talents and energy of the next generation of maritime professionals?
  • How might The Nautical Institute best facilitate the discussion of topics and issues specific each region?

This was a lively and engaged discussion generating many original ideas, novel approaches and re-workings of existing processes.  These included addressing: the frequency and style of communications, the role of global ambassadors for the organisation, the recognition and rewarding of outstanding contributions by members, more tailored support for students and cadets, different ways of engaging local maritime decision-makers - and much more.

As a professional membership organisation, we value our members and always work closely with them, sharing ideas and best practice that enable better decision making.
