I have also experienced a "phantom" rudder hard over when I was a junior officer which was not properly explained. However, in this incident there were no portable radios or telephones around to take the blame and the steering was totally hydraulic. However, something caused a loaded tanker to swerve across the Suez Canal, bounce off one bank and onto the other before bringing the steering gear under control, luckily it was a sandy patch.
