London Branch Biennial Conference 2026: Geopolitical maritime risks and security threats to seafarers
Protecting seafarers in a volatile world
The London Branch of The Nautical Institute is pleased to host its Biennial Conference this year on the theme of 'Geopolitical maritime risks and security threats to seafarers'.
Recent events have shown that the maritime domain is vulnerable to a number of known and emerging threats, placing shipping operations and crews under intense stress and strain: Navigating conflict zones, piracy and armed kidnapping, unlawful detentions, cyber attack, state-sponsored espionage, drone attacks, dark fleet activities – and much more. Understanding these risks and how they can manifest and combine is the first step to developing methods and tools to counter them; and to building a future industry capable of sustaining and mitigating them in the longer term.
Join us on 30 June for a full-day conference at the International Maritime Organization in London to explore these themes, hear from industry leaders and exchange views on what needs to change for the future safety and security of the global shipping community - placing the seafarer’s safety at its heart.
Hear from speakers representing different aspects of contemporary maritime security, including UK War Risks Club, CyberOwl, BMT, Shipserve – as well as independent experts.
We are proud to confirm that the IMO Secretary-General will give the opening address, and the incoming President of The Nautical Institute, Mr Walter Vervloesem FNI, will Chair the technical sessions.
