A report into understanding how technology impacts seafarers
“If technology is intended to improve safety, life and work at sea, the experiences of seafarers who operate it every day must be heard.”

Improving safety at sea by listening to seafarers’ experiences with technology before acting on them is the principle that guides this report and the STEER Project as a whole.
Maritime technology is transforming faster than at any time since the shift from sail to steam.
Yet, the industry’s understanding of this change has largely been shaped by narratives other than those of the seafarers who operate these systems day to day. The project aims to improve safety by collecting real experiences, including both challenges and successes, and sharing the lessons learned through practical tools and guidance.
This report is not a standalone document but the first in a series that will run throughout the STEER Project’s lifecycle. It begins the process of turning evidence into tangible impact and lasting change in how technology is used at sea.
