Pilot transfers are a key part of efficient maritime operations but can result in accidents and even fatalities if not carried out with due care and diligence.

This competition, organised by The Nautical Institute in partnership with the International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA), is designed to enhance the understanding of tomorrow’s mariners in tackling this essential element of marine activity.

Open to all maritime students and cadets undergoing initial maritime training, competition entrants are invited to select three key safety rules detailed on the IMPA poster 'Required Pilot Transfer Arrangements' and explain the rationale that lies behind each.

For example, the diagram sets out the need to use spreaders. But what is the reason for using a spreader? Why is there a requirement to position one on the 5th step from the bottom of the pilot ladder? And why does each spreader need to be a minimum length of 180cm?
