Seafarer Mental Health & Crew Wellbeing Workshop
Develop a toolkit to effectively support your crew, identify early warnings, and respond quickly to ensure resilience of personnel at sea. Supporting the mental health of seafarers is essential to maintaining safety, communication, and effective team performance.
This one-day, instructor-led workshop provides maritime professionals with practical knowledge and tools to recognise, respond to, and support mental wellbeing onboard. Through guided discussion, case studies and hands-on activities, participants learn how mental health affects individuals and teams and how leaders can create a safer, more supportive work environment.
Designed by psychology and maritime experts, this course will provide senior management teams and officers understand and act upon their responsibilities for managing mental health onboard.
This interactive workshop helps participants:
- Understand why mental health matters for seafarers
- Identify what good and poor mental health look like
- Recognise how the working environment influences wellbeing
- Learn about the mental health continuum
- Spot early warning signs and potential ‘red flags’
- Use practical tools to respond to mental health concerns and crises
- Analyse high-risk onboard situations that may impact wellbeing
- Strengthen confidence in managing difficult situations through case studies
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the importance of mental health in maritime operations
- Describe contributing factors to healthy and unhealthy mental states
- Assess situations along the mental health continuum, and recognise behaviours that may indicate distress or crisis
- Apply a practical toolkit for early intervention and crisis management
- Evaluate their workplace for environmental and organisational risk factors
- Communicate constructively during challenging interpersonal situations
- One-day workshop (approx. 8 hours including breaks)
- Face-to-face, instructor-led delivery
- Highly interactive: group exercises, discussions and practical tasks
- Designed for up to 12 participants per workshop
This course is assessed on a pass/fail basis.
To successfully complete the workshop, participants must:
- Attend the full course
- Participate actively in all activities to the satisfaction of the instructor
Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion from The Nautical Institute Academy.
