Plotting the Course: From Archive to S-100
The RIN's Maritime Navigation Group has collaborated with the UKHO and OSI Maritime Systems to support this exciting S-100 focused event, which will be hosted at the UKHO's Taunton site. The S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model is the new geospatial standard which will underpin the next generation of digital navigation products. Implementation of S-100 will deliver improved navigational safety, economic and environmental efficiencies, and enhanced interoperability. New features such as the incorporation of dynamic tides, surface currents, ice information, and weather warnings will enhance decision making from ship to shore. Ensuring safer and more efficient maritime operations, S-100 will also lay the foundations for remote operations and autonomy.
Taking place on the 4th December 2026 between 0930 and 1530, RIN members will have the opportunity to visit the UKHO and obtain the latest S-100 updates direct from a world-leading centre for hydrography and marine geospatial data. RIN members will also have the opportunity to get 'hands-on' with S-100 products in a workshop setting, providing familiarisation with S-100 products and first-hand experience as to how such products will be implemented from an end user perspective.
Following lunch, we will visit the UKHO archive; home to over 14 million historical items including navigational records, captain's logs, and hydrographic surveys dating back to the early 1600s, this will serve as a timely reminder as to how far we have come with respect to charting, before concluding the event with some hands-on S-100 focussed passage planning.
