Meet Your Officers! - Chair

James Spear

I’m the Director of Professional Mariner Training at SUNY Maritime College, where I previously taught full-time in the Marine Transportation Department. My career has focused on the intersection of energy, shipping, and the environment, with roles at Shell, ExxonMobil, and Cheniere Energy. I’ve sailed on both Jones Act and international-flag vessels, including LNG carriers and product tankers.
 

Before joining SUNY Maritime, I worked ashore in marine assurance, commercial optimization, and terminal operations. I’m a recurring delegate to the IMO’s MEPC and serve as President of the Navy League’s New York Council. At the College, I teach courses in sustainability, tanker operations, ship management, and LNG, and serve as faculty lead for the LNG Center of Excellence and advisor to SPARK, our student energy club.

Meet Your Officers! - Vice Chair

Captain John Jamroga

A lifelong resident of Connecticut, I presently live in Waterford with my family. I graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 1996 and spent 15 years on chemical parcel tankers all around the world working from the position of Junior Third Officer up to Master. I am presently working as a pilot in Maryland and hold a USCG Master Unlimited - Oceans license.

Fun Fact: I had the privilege of bringing the first aircraft carrier ever up the Chesapeake Bay, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, in November 2019.

Meet Your Officers! - Treasurer

Hi! I am Laura McCormack, the Treasurer of the U.S. Northeast Branch. I am from Boston but reside in Manchester, NH with my husband, two toddler boys, and an Australian Terrier named Bruin. I graduated Massachusetts Maritime Academy 13' with a BS in Marine Transportation and a deck license. I sailed for 10 years on various vessels but mostly tankers and bulk carriers. Over the years I have upgraded my license and endorsements as well as furthering my education with a Masters degree. Recently, I transitioned to a shoreside role with Crowley in the Shipping department.

Fun Fact: I was lucky enough to sail on the M/T Maersk Peary. She participated in Operation Deep Freeze, transporting fuel to McMurdo Station, Antarctica and Operation Pacer Goose, transporting fuel to Thule Air Force Base, Thule, Greenland. Red Nose and Blue Nose Shellback!
