Though based largely in Gdynia, we are the home for members from Szczecin to Elbląg - and everywhere in between.

With a rapidly growing membership we are continually working to represent and engage our local members, and to collaborate with sister branches across Northern Europe.

Ulisses Award honours outstanding supporters of The Nautical Institute

Presented every two years during the TransNav Conference since 2019, the Ulisses Award recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the work and promotion of The Nautical Institute, a co-organiser of the conference. The award is founded by the Poland Branch of The Nautical Institute.

Over the years, the honour has been awarded to distinguished representatives of the maritime community whose work has supported the Institute’s mission and international presence.

The recipients to date are:

Capt. Szczepan Kowalewski of Poland in 2019,
Capt. John Lloyd of the United Kingdom in 2021,
Capt. Andre L. LeGoubin, Past President of The Nautical Institute in 2023,
Prof. Vladimir Torskiy of Ukraine in 2025.

The award reflects the strong and longstanding connection between TransNav, The Nautical Institute, and the Poland Branch, while also highlighting the individuals whose dedication has helped advance maritime professionalism and strengthen the Institute’s visibility within the international maritime community. This final sentence is an inference drawn from the award’s stated purpose and the role of the Poland Branch as founder.

The 2025 Branch Special AGM

On 4 December 2025, The Nautical Institute Poland Branch held its Annual General Meeting at the Faculty of Navigation of Gdynia Maritime University in a hybrid format. The meeting had a special character, offering members an opportunity to come together in a wider group than had been possible during this year’s TransNav conference. Alongside a review of the Branch’s recent activities, including its contribution to TransNav 2025, the meeting also highlighted the Branch’s continued academic and professional engagement.

A new Committee for the 2025-2027 term was elected by acclamation, with Capt. Paweł Kołakowski AFNI taking on the role of Chairman. The meeting was also a moment of heartfelt thanks to Prof. Capt. Adam Weintrit FNI for 20 years of dedicated leadership and for his lasting contribution to building and developing the Poland Branch.

TransNav 2025

From 11 to 13 June 2025, Gdynia, Poland hosted TransNav 2025 - the 16th International Conference on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation. Organized by the Faculty of Navigation of Gdynia Maritime University in cooperation with The Nautical Institute, the conference brought the international maritime community to UMG for three days of discussion on navigation, safety at sea, maritime security and the protection of the marine environment. The event welcomed participants representing 83 nationalities, underlining its strong international character.

During the conference, the Branch AGM was held, during which the activities of The Nautical Institute Poland Branch over the previous year were reviewed.

TransNav2025

TransNav 2023

From 21 to 23 June 2023, Gdynia, Poland hosted TransNav 2023 - the 15th International Conference on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation. Organized by the Faculty of Navigation of Gdynia Maritime University in cooperation with The Nautical Institute, the conference brought together more than 200 participants, with scientific committee members and reviewers representing 79 countries, to exchange knowledge, experience, and research findings on navigation, safety of sea transportation, and the key challenges facing contemporary waterborne transport, including infrastructure, environment, security, mobility, and economic issues.

During the conference, the Branch AGM was also held, during which the activities of The Nautical Institute Poland Branch over the previous year were reviewed.
