200375 Smoking in Bed

16 Mar 2003 MARS

Whilst on Safety Rounds after his 12-4 watch, the 2/O could smell smoke in the crew cabin alleyway. He immediately sounded the fire alarm and reported the situation to the bridge. While the mustering of emergency parties took place, he traced the source to an A/B's cabin where he discovered a pillow smouldering. He managed to extinguish the pillow and bring the situation under control. The A/B concerned had been smoking in his bunk before going on the 4-8 watch.

A more serious incident was avoided by good safety practice by the 2/O. He also displayed good judgement when assessing whether the source of the smoke could be dealt with by him on the spot or left to the full fire B/A team, with the possibility of the situation worsening in the inevitable delay.
