Behavioural Competancy Assessor

The Nautical Institute's Behavioural Competency Assessor Course has been designed to provide industry guidance on competency assessment. This course is aimed at person/s conducting behavioural competency based assessments of seafarers on board vessels.

In line with IMO Model Course 1.30; section A-1/6 of the STCW Code; TMSA 3 – Element 3 and section 4.20 of Guide to Safe Container Operations by Container Ship Safety forum, The Nautical Institute's Behavioural Competency Assessors course is intended to build on the technical competency of experienced officers and engineers. The course gives them the skills, techniques and confidence to assess and record behavioural competency in support of company operations, to improve quality and reduce risk.

It is primarily intended for those conducting in service assessments of the behavioural competence of seafarers on board ships.

The course is delivered online over five consecutive days.

Course Outline

The Nautical Institute Academy’s Behavioural Competency Assessor Course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of assessors who carry out assessments on-board, under voyage conditions, and in accordance with the guidelines and competencies of the specific ship and/or company.

The course is divided into four modules:

  • Module 01: Introduction to behavioural competency assessment
  • Module 02: The skills of an assessor
  • Module 03: The process of conducting an assessment.
  • Module 04: Overcoming hurdles through case studies

Aims and Objectives

This course is specifically designed to not only introduce and familiarise candidates with behavioural traits and indicators but to also help them to understand Behavioural Competency and Verification and TMSA 3 Element 14, The Human Element.

The course looks extensively at sector specific risk and risk assessment with the key focus being on the safe port/terminal and sea operations of the sector (please note - the course can be adapted and tailored to meet specific company competences and frameworks).

Candidates can expect to gain knowledge of:

  • Understanding the background and need for behavioural competency assessment
  • Familiarisation with the Behavioural Competency Assessment and Criteria
  • Understanding the risk-based approach
  • How to conduct an effective assessment
  • Self-reflection and assessment of individual skills as an assessor
  • Developing tools required to carry out an effective behavioural assessment on board.  

Who is the course suitable for?

The course is designed for members of the maritime community, specifically those in the industry who are, or are looking to, engage with onboard assessment. 

Although there are no specific requirements, participants should have a good working knowledge of operations and ship role based tasks under voyage conditions. 

 

Assessment and Certification

This is a pass/fail course.

To achieve a pass, participants must:

  • Attend the course in full. 
  • Pass a theoretical exam held at the end of the course.
  • Complete the assignment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete all required elements of practical auditing tasks to the satisfaction of the lecturer

Please note, the pass mark is 70%.
