Enclosed Spaces Competition

Enclosed spaces kill.

In the last year, more than 20 seafarers have lost their lives in enclosed-space related accidents.

This is a familiar story that we hear year after year. It’s time we put an end to it.

The Nautical Institute is teaming up with InterManager and IMarEST to change things– and we need your help. Enter our maritime safety competition, or share the news! Better yet, both. Any idea is a good idea!

We are launching a major maritime safety competition to share innovative and practical ideas to make entry into enclosed spaces safer. We’d love to hear from you, as an individual or as a team of up to four people. Send your ideas to  enclosedspacecomp@nautinst.org  by 31 March 2022.

Your entry can be in any format – a report, a poster, a video. It should give us a summary of your idea, and explanation of how it would save lives, and an outline of what would be needed for successful implementation. Entries will be judged by a specialist technical panel, and announced at a technical webinar held by The Nautical Institute later in the year.

  1. The competition is open to all and is free to enter

  2. Entry submissions can be in any format – a report, a poster, a video but can only be made using the email: enclosedspacecomp@nautinst.org

  3. The closing date for entries is 31st March 2022
  4. Entries must be the original work of the individual or team submitting the content and permission granted for sharing the submission as described below.
  5. Entries will be reviewed and judged by a technical panel who will assess the practicality and suitability of ideas.  It is expected that winning entries will be known by 30th April 2022.  The decision of the judges is final.
  6. Awards will be made to the entries judged to provide the best suggestions for enhancing safety in enclosed spaces.  Awards will be made for individual submissions and for group submissions.
  7. The awards will comprise a Certificate of Recognition awarded by one or more of the supporting organisations.  Awards will be presented during 2022.
  8. Winning entries will be shared with the maritime community through technical journals and other media.  It is a condition of entry that the information submitted may be shared in this way.

Together, we can save lives.
