This course explores key issues and provides practical advice on:
- What defines an assessment
- Improving safety and best practice
- How to conduct the assessment with a systematic approach
- Preparing an effective report.
Target Audience: Personnel requiring to demonstrate they hold a qualification to be able to conduct navigation audits stipulated in TMSA3 element 5, Marine Consultants, Surveyors, Inspectors, Marine Managers, Superintendents, Shipmasters preparing for navigation assessments.
Award of the Navigation Assessor's Qualification is dependent upon successful completion of 2 phases:
Which consists of a theoretical examination to determine a candidate's understanding of the course content. This exam is undertaken at the end of the two day course.
Which consists of undertaking an actual Navigation Assessment and submitting a Navigational Assessment report for review. This report should closely follow the guidelines delivered during the course and contained within the presentation.
- The 2019 fee to complete part B is £400(+VAT).
- Part A and B must be completed within 6 months of the course start date.

The minimum entry requirement is that students will be:
- Internal Assessor: Master Mariner (Class 1 Certificate of Competency) from a ‘White List’ country.
- External Assessor: as above and have command experience for a minimum of 12 months.
Applications will also be considered from applicants who can demonstrate an equivalent level of professional service in the maritime sector.
Candidates applying for the External Navigation Assessor qualification must hold a valid Navigation Assessor Part A certificate issued by The Nautical Institute within the last year.
In addition, the candidate shall undertake a practical assessment for five days on board a vessel. The practical assessment must be done individually.
The report should be made in an approved format with all relevant sections filled.
The navigational assessment documentation should be signed by the attending assessor and sent to The Nautical Institute by e-mail. Candidates should submit a sufficiently anonymised report that ensures the actual ship, owner, manager or other entity cannot be identified from the report.
The practical assessment evaluation shall consist of a review of a completed navigational assessment report following an on-board navigation assessment and an interview by The Nautical Institute appointed assessor.
On successful passing of the assessment, the candidate will be awarded The Nautical Institute Navigation Assessor certificate.
All assessment documentation will be retained by The Nautical Institute.
