Training Schemes: Square Rig Sailing
The Nautical Institute recognises that the master and officers of square-rigged sailing vessels require specialist knowledge and proven experience to operate these vessels safely. To this end the Institute's square rigged sailing ship committee has formalised a way of encouraging sailing ship officers to meet a standard of proficiency through a Square Rigged Sailing Ship Certificate scheme. The certificate will be awarded to those who successfully pass:
  • A two hour written examination with an overall pass mark of 60% but with proven ability to answer correctly essential safety seamanship questions;
  • An oral examination.

The examination covers the following broad areas: sailing ship stability, handling and manoeuvring a square rigged sailing vessel, emergencies, maintenance, passage planning, shipboard organisation, rule of the road. The dates for the examinations are arranged on request.

The Institute publishes two books which may be of assistance to those wishing to sit these examinations: -
