Our vessel has been ‘completing’ these logs for many years now because we are, on paper anyway, part of a large fleet and have always been operated commercially… I really do not enjoy asking my crew to sign off anything that is not true, or at the very least ‘useful in some way’… After complaining to management soon after I joined about time wasting ‘paper exercises’ I was told in no uncertain terms that it is ‘normal’ and the only possible way to comply! I was also quoted umpteen different ways in which my commercial brethren ‘manage to fill in their forms’ this included a captain under the same ISM management company who uses a stamp for his departure and arrival checks and who’s young daughter ‘stamps his log up’ for him once a week…
