Categories, Criteria and Fees

MEMBERSHIP GRADES

Fellow

Election by nomination after a minimum of five years continuous membership and significant contribution to the profession.

Associate Fellow (AFNI)

  • Must match one or more of the following criteria:
  • Command of a commercial or naval sea-going vessel
  • Other senior position at sea
  • Senior management position ashore of equivalent standing to command at sea

Member (MNI)

Must match one or more of the following criteria:

  • Has been issued a Certificate of Competency by an IMO 'white list' Marine Administration under STCW '78/'95 as amended
  • Has held an equivalent pre-STCW 1978 Certificate of Competency issued by a Marine Administration on the basis of examination
  • Has been issued other acceptable maritime qualifications, including:
  • A licence as a maritime Pilot of sea-going vessels
  • A Naval qualification equivalent to an STCW Certificate of Competency
  • The Nautical Institute's Dynamic Positioning Operator Certificate
  • The Nautical Institute's Square Rig, Harbourmaster or Command Certificates
  • Approved qualifications as a Harbourmaster, VTS operator or Manager on the basis of IALA model courses, Marine Surveyor, Designated Person, Professional Yachtmaster or Officer of the Watch issued by a national Marine Administration, Maritime lawyer, or Maritime Heath and Welfare Professional
  • Council may accept a minimum of three years experience in lieu of formal qualifications from management level maritime professionals
  • Has other qualifications or experience accepted by Council for this purpose

Associate Member (AMNI)

  • Must match one or more of the following criteria:
  • Be undertaking an approved course of initial maritime training or education
  • Hold a Rating or Boatmaster qualification
  • Hold a non-management level maritime appointment

Notwithstanding the criteria set out above, Council reserves the right in the maintenance of professional standards to consider all applications for membership on their merits and its decision shall be final.

Unsure which membership grade to apply for?

Apply for the Member (MNI) grade or email member@nautinst.org with your details for a response.

The staff, on behalf of Council and its Membership Committee, will assess the application and either assign the appropriate grade or refer the application to the Membership Committee for a decision. The membership and Joining Fees will be adjusted accordingly if necessary.
