The Nautical Institute offers accreditation for maritime related training that is not usually regulated by other bodies. This accreditation is either conducted on behalf of the Institute itself or other external bodies such as MCA and DTI in the case of oil spill response courses.
Currently the Institute accredits training in the following areas:
The Nautical Institute provides a variety of accreditation services. The principal of these is where the Institute assesses training centres offering particular courses, verifying the standard and issuing these centres with certificates recognising the achievement of the standard. These training centres are assessed at regular intervals, have to maintain certain standards and keep records.
A number of training centres are currently accredited for the conduct of courses within the requirements of The Nautical Institute scheme.
The accreditation of a training centre will address a number of areas in order to assess its suitability to conduct training to the standards of the scheme. The centre will need to show how it intends to conduct the training, together with the administration and record keeping. It must provide course structures covering each course conducted, together with schemes or work, lesson plans and other teaching materials.

DP Operators
The Institute operates the certification scheme for DP Operators, which involves not only the approval of the training centres but also the verification of evidence and the issuing of certificates. This DP Scheme enjoys reciprocal recognition with that of the Norwegian Maritime Directorate.
The route to certification is set out in the flowchart contained in
The Nautical Institute Dynamic Positioning Operator's Certificate - version 1.06, January 2010
Please read the Guide to completing your DP Log Book. Many applications for DP certificates are unsuccessful because the logbooks are completed incorrectly. Follow this guide to ensure that your logbook can be processed quickly and your certificate issued as soon as possible.

The International Association of Drilling Contractors, in conjunction with The Nautical Institute, has developed a standard for a comprehensive stability training course based on IMO Assembly Resolution A.891(21).
The course has also been designed as the starting point for an IADC Ballast Control Operator (BCO) Certification, which qualified individuals can obtain upon documentation of sea time and verified completion of key ballast control tasks.
Training providers seeking to deliver the course must demonstrate compliance with standards of accreditation established by IADC/NI regarding course structure, instructional materials, testing and administrative procedures, and instructor qualifications.
Accreditation would be valid for a period of five years, contingent on annual renewal and reporting requirements.
These standards, required by Article 6 of the International Maritime Organisation’s International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC) and operated by the Institute in the UK on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, ensure that all involved in the response to a maritime oil spill are adequately trained and prepared for their roles.
