AIS Feedback Wanted!

AIS is a ongoing and developing standard, with both new uses for the technology and new equipment being introduced on a regular basis.

Many vessels have already fitted the systems and some reports of errors have surfaced. It is felt that many of these problems might be due to faulty installations, but some may not. In any case, the industry is keen to identify common faults and offer advice and corrective measures to reduce these errors.

Mariners, Pilots, VTS and Port Operators are therefore all requested to report AIS problems and feedback!

The Nautical Institute's Technical Committee has arranged to collate any reported incidents and submit them to the appropriate bodies including the International Electrotechical Commission (IEC) who set technical standards, and the International Association of Marine Electronics Companies (CIRM). These organisations will then analyse all reports and offer advice and corrective action, which will then be published by The Nautical Institute and supporting organisations.

AIS users are requested to report any AIS problems to ais@nautinst.org. These problems might include incorrect vectors, faulty transmitted information, target swap, position variation etc...

Users are further requested to include specific details of errors including time, position, ship identification, and where possible details of equipment involved. Please note that it will not be possible to reply individually to each report, but all the reports will be analysed and corrective advice will be published in Seaways and on this site.

The aim of this initiative is to identify problems, improve installation and ultimately to improve the technology through design and regulation. All reports gratefully received!
